Matthew Luongo MAEd, RDN, CSSD
Matt is a Registered Dietitian and Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD). He holds a Master’s Degree in Education from Virginia Tech, where he served as the sports dietitian for six of their NCAA division one athletic teams. Matt worked closely with the entire sports medicine team, adding nutrition and hydration goals to the athlete’s performance plan. While at Virginia Tech, Matt gave frequent presentations to the athletic teams on a wide range of nutritional topics including optimal fueling and hydration strategies, eating disorders and weight loss. Matt has also served as the consulting sports RD at Radford University, where he worked closely with athletes on all 18 of their varsity sports teams. Prior to his time in Virginia, Matt worked as the outpatient clinical dietitian at Christ Hospital in New Jersey. There he worked primarily with individuals with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, cardiac disease- including HTN, high cholesterol and weight loss, bariatric (pre and post-surgery), oncology, and disordered eating. Over the past several years and across two states, Matthew has gained valuable experience on both the clinical nutrition side as well as nutrition for athletic performance. He joined the Nutrition Energy team to continue his work with both athletes of all ages and abilities and individuals seeking help improving medical conditions or long-term weight loss. Matt has found that his love for food combined with his care for others fuels his passion for nutrition education and connecting with other people.

SPORTS AND PERSONAL INTERESTS
Matt’s love of baseball began in early childhood and continues today. He was a collegiate baseball player for Montclair State University, earning first team all-conference his senior year as shortstop. He was also NJ state high school baseball champion in 2009 for Christian Brothers Academy- the school’s first in 32 years. Matt currently competes in semi-professional beach volleyball in the Great American Volleyball League and regularly laces up his skates for ice hockey. Originally from Brooklyn, NY, Matt is thrilled to be back in NYC. In his spare time, Matt enjoys cooking, training at the gym and reading.
Life is all about balance, and this pertains especially to food. Matt believes good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle includes using food as your fuel as well as developing a positive relationship with what you eat. Matt will work with you to individualize a plan and manage day to day challenges while helping you achieve your goals. As an athlete, he has seen first-hand the correlation between good nutrition and optimal performance. No foods are off limits, but timing and moderation are essential. Matt’s counseling style is extremely thorough and personal, and combines nutrition education with positive behavior modification. Though there may not be one “quick fix” or one miracle diet, small changes can make the biggest difference.
